Tibet is divided administratively into the Tibet Autonomous Region and parts of the Qinghai, Gansu, Yunnan and Sichuan provinces. Tibet is also constitutionally claimed by the Republic of China as the Tibet Area since 1912. Tibet is the highest region on Earth, with an average elevation of 4,380 m (14,000 ft).

The name Tibet is derived from the Mongolian Thubet, the Chinese Tufan, the Tai Thibet, and the Arabic Tubbat.
For the first time, we show the entire set of maps and describe their cartographic characteristics. We also provide the Tibetan spelling, transliteration and translations for the numerous Tibetan inscriptions and explanations.
This map formalized the territory of what Tibet is to the world at large and to the Tibetan communities, especially to young educated Tibetans who were trying to understand, imagine and define their country.
ICT’s Map Project is an initiative to collect, analyze and distribute old maps of Asia depicting Tibet through the ages. The project graphically shows how boundaries of Tibet have shifted over time and demonstrates that prior to 1949.
