Historical geography seeks to understand geographies of the past and also how the past impinges on the present. Historical geography derives theoretical viewpoints, subject matters, and methodological tools from both geography and history and it works at the boundary of these academic disciplines.
Periodization is the process of categorizing the past into discrete, quantified, named blocks of time in order to facilitate the study and analysis of history. This results in descriptive abstractions that provide convenient terms for periods of time with relatively stable characteristics.
