The highest salary step that a regular substitute teacher can attain credit for, even if certified, is Step 4A. A salary step is an increase in salary based on previous experience. Learn about steps, longevities, and access the DOE’s online salary step application.
In order to advance correctly to the next salary step, you must submit a new salary step application. If you worked for the DOE on a per diem basis for 85 days or more during your leave, this service will be taken into account and applied toward a potential increase in your salary step.

Paper applications will no longer be accepted at the HR Connect Walk-in Center (located at 65 Court Street, Brooklyn).
A salary step is an incremental increase in salary based on qualifying professional experience and longevity. Salary steps are listed in the left column of the salary schedule. As a NYC Public Schools (NYCPS) teacher, you will move up two salary steps per year of satisfactory NYCPS service.

Once you begin teaching, you will need to submit a salary step application in the NYCPS Salary Application System within 6 months. Your salary step application will include information about your previous work history, which the Office of Salary Services will evaluate to determine your salary step.
