How many words are in a novella? Estimates vary, of course, but a novella is usually anywhere between 10,000 to 50,000 words long. However, novels for younger audiences often run shorter, so 50,000 words may be nearer to a full-length novel in certain markets.

The usual word count for a novella can span from 10,000 words to 40,000 words. Above that, you have a short novel, and below that count, you have a short story. The shorter end of the novella, from 10,000 to 20,000 words, can also be considered a novelette.
