14 mar 2013 · I would use the empty cell array {} if it is not a valid result otherwise. Using empty matrices is MATLAB standard (see Evgeni Sergeev's answer), but using an empty cell array instead of an empty numeric array ensures that you'll always end up with the same type of result.
Since the argument names are local to the function, Matlab has no way of telling whether the second or the third optional argument is missing. If you require arguments that are independent of their order, you need to implement key/value pairs. A rather elegant way is described in this answer on SO. – Christian Clason.
