I was thinking of the notion that some people believe, namely that oral language, verbal language in the child is a development of something that happens prior to the emergence of spoken language — nonverbal activities such as pointing, etc., cognitive activity — pre-language rites as it were.
If we understood, as we do not, the physical bases for these structures, I have little doubt that we would find structures in the brain for social interactions, or language, or analysis of personality — a whole variety of systems developed on the basis of a specific biological endowment.
We will focus on (i) innateness, (ii) the status of movement in syntactic theories, and (iii) Chomsky’s view of meaning. Perhaps the most contested part of Chomsky’s approach to human language is his arguments that parts of the language faculty are innate.
