Battery/Display. The camera is on but does not respond: Wait for recording and other operations to end. If the problem persists, turn the camera off. If the camera does not turn off, remove and reinsert the battery. If you are using an AC adapter, disconnect and reconnect the AC adapter.

Optical VR. This item is displayed only with lenses that support it. Selecting On enables vibration reduction, which takes effect whenever the shutter-release button is pressed halfway (0 Vibration Reduction (VR)). Select Off to disable vibration reduction.
Nikon's manuals don't make this very clear, but it really is quite simple with older Nikon DSLRs: only the shutter release activates the VR system (the D4/D800 and all later cameras are exceptions: Nikon changed VR so that it is also activated by the AF On button).
