NIIRS. Identify the wing configuration (e.g., straight, swept, delta) of all large aircraft (e.g., 707, CONCORD, BEAR, BLACKJACK). Identify radar and guidance areas at a SAM site by the configuration, mounds, and presence of concrete aprons. Detect a helipad by the configuration and markings.
The scale uses a number to indicate the level of detail which may be seen in an image, and therefore how much information may be expected from it. Military and Civil NIIRS scales are used to grade visible, radar, infra-red and multispectral imagery.

21 lis 1997 · The NIIRS defines the levels of image interpretability by the types of tasks an analyst can perform with imagery of a given rating level. The NIIRS provides a simple, yet powerful, tool for assessing and communicating image quality and sensor system requirements.
The National Imagery Interpretability Rating Scale (NIIRS) has served as a community standard for still imagery, but no comparable scale exists for motion imagery.
This document presents the Civil National Imagery Interpretability Rating Scale (NIIRS) and discusses its use. Image examples using the Civil NIIRS are displayed in Appendix I. Additional Civil NIIRS criteria are listed in Appendix II and a history of NIIRS appears in Appendix III.
It is a 10-level scale that helps analysts to assess quantitatively the quality of images for exploitation. The GIQE was developed specifically as a tool to estimate the NIIRS as a function of imaging system design parameters.
