SI prefixes are systematic way to write "very big" or "very small" numbers. For example we can use kilo prefix and say one kilo-gram (1kg) instead of saying 1000 grams (1000g). In similar way we can create other units like GHz (giga-herz), MV (mega-volt), cm (centi-metre) etc.
