The New Mexico herd came from Iran in the early 1970s, and are considered Persian or Bezoar ibex. The herd size is somewhere between 400 and 600 animals. The mountain range is 9 miles long and 6.5 miles wide, and is comprised of very steep, difficult terrain, even by goat or sheep-hunting standards.
In 1970, the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish imported 15 Persian ibex from Iran and released them in the Florida Mountains near Deming, New Mexico. Soon after, an additional 27 were released, and a sustainable population was established.
