19 maj 2010 · This guideline covers diagnosing and treating jaundice, which is caused by increased levels of bilirubin in the blood, in newborn babies (neonates). It aims to help detect or prevent very high levels of bilirubin, which can be harmful if not treated.
5 sie 2022 · This committee worked from 2014 to 2022 to review new evidence and to identify opportunities to clarify and improve the 2004 guideline. This report underwent extensive peer review by a wide array of clinicians and experts in neonatal hyperbilirubinemia and by parents of children with kernicterus.
1 cze 2007 · Hyperbilirubinemia is very common and usually benign in the term newborn infant and the late preterm infant at 35 to 36 completed weeks’ gestation. Critical hyperbilirubinemia is uncommon but has the potential for causing long-term neurological impairment.

Clinicians can evaluate a patient’s need for exchange transfusion using graphs in III.F of the Clinical Practice Guidelines, or using Bilitool.org. Decisions to initiate phototherapy or escalate care are guided by the gestational age, the hour-specific TSB, and the presence of risk factors for bilirubin neurotoxicity (below).
