Most of the shoes on that tree are hung up there by people who buy new shoes at Neel's Gap and keep hiking on. I know because I watched two separate people throw their shoes into the tree on just the one hour that I was there during my thru and I heard about several other people who got new shoes in that same spot.

Well, I don’t know how that proves the anecdote that all those shoes in the trees are from a glut of hikers quitting at Neel Gap. Do you have a fact or fiction to share? Don’t forget squats with your pack on.
There were shoes hanging in a tree and on, if I recall, a nearby telephone pole wire in 06-08, 2010-14, 2016, and 2019. The shoes, from what I've seen, are not only from quitters but simply some worn out or otherwise discarded shoes.
27 kwi 2023 · I got a new pair of shoes, the Asolo Softrock Hiking Shoes and a new pair of Superfeet inserts. I originally had Altras , but have high arches, and they just weren’t working out for my feet. I chucked them up into the tree with much delight.
25 kwi 2022 · When getting into Neel Gap and seeing the “shoe tree” I began crying. They were happy tears because I wasn’t hanging up my shoes in that tree. And I can proudly say that 100% of my current trail family are also keeping their shoes on their feet, a profound statement on our tenacity and bonds forming.
