Bechuanaland : further correspondence respecting the affairs of Bechuanaland and adjacent territories
The Bechuanaland Protectorate (/ ˌ b ɛ tʃ u ˈ ɑː n ə l æ n d /) was a protectorate established on 31 March 1885 in Southern Africa by the United Kingdom. It became the Republic of Botswana on 30 September 1966.
A name applied to the territory in southwestern Africa inhabited by the Bechuanas (q.v.) (Map: Cape Colony, H 4). It includes the Crown colony of Bechuanaland, annexed to Cape Colony since 1895, and the Bechuanaland Protectorate.

16 mar 2011 · Following the discovery of gold in 1866 in the Tuli region of present-day Botswana the Transvaal Voortrekkers attempted to annex the greater part of Bechuanaland in 1868. The British in the Cape Colony did not support this claim and the Transvaal, or South African Republic, was forced to abandon it.

Bechuanaland (bĕchŏŏ-ä'nā́ or bĕk'ū-ă'na-lănd), is a native territory in South Africa annexed to Cape Colony in 1895. It contains 51,524 square miles and a population (estimated for 1908) of 94,608, of whom 9,608 were whites.
