If we ignore the first four crazy years of the tournament (since expanding to 64 teams), 31 of the last 34 champs were a 1, 2, or 3-seed. The following tables show how many times each seed has won the tournament and lists the seed and champ for each year.

When the tournament first started, only eight teams competed in the tournament and seeds were assigned 1–8. As the number of teams in the tournament grew, more seeds were added. Currently, 68 teams compete in the tournament and seeds are assigned 1–16 in four regional brackets.
