The NC-4 form is used by employees to claim exemption from withholding tax in North Carolina.
Form NC-4, known as the Employee’s Withholding Allowance Certificate, serves as North Carolina’s state-level income tax withholding form. It functions similarly to the federal IRS Form W-4. (If you require guidance for completing your federal Form W-4, check out our W-4 guide).
PURPOSE - Complete Form NC-4, Employee’s Withholding Allowance Certificate, so that your employer can withhold the correct amount of State income tax from your pay. If you do not provide an NC-4 to your employer, your employer is required to withhold based on single with zero allowances.
Complete Form W-4 so that your employer can withhold the correct federal income tax from your pay. If too little is withheld, you will generally owe tax when you file your tax return and may owe a penalty. If too much is withheld, you will generally be due a refund.
