The Third Shinobi World War (第三次忍界大戦, Daisanji Ninkai Taisen, English TV: Third Great Ninja War) was the third of the four shinobi wars that involved the majority of the shinobi villages. It took place more than ten years prior to the beginning of the series.
The episodes are directed by Hayato Date and produced by Pierrot and TV Tokyo. [1] The season focuses on the Fourth Great Ninja War between Naruto Uzumaki and the Hidden Villages' ninja against the forces under the masked ninja Tobi and Kabuto Yakushi. There is also a side story arc.

From what I know (and from checking on Narutopedia), the Third Shinobi World War suddenly broke out and Itachi when he was 4, well... he just saw the mess, the corpses and the blood and all that. He was traumatized, but he didn't actually kill anybody.
