The Narragansett turkey is a breed of Meleagris gallopavo which descends from a cross between the eastern wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo silvestris) and the domestic turkey. According to the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy , the Narragansett turkey is a "historic variety, unique to North America " and is named for Narragansett Bay .
Narragansett turkeys have traditionally been known for their calm disposition, good maternal abilities, early maturation, egg production, and excellent meat quality. As recently as 50 years ago, they were well regarded for production qualities.
These turkeys are primarily black with bands of steel gray, with dull black tails penciled with parallel lines of tan and edged in steel gray. The babies are dark brownish/black with penciling on head and back, yellow bellies. Narragansetts are a rare, multicolored, medium-sized breed of fowl.
