16 sie 2024 · Esters. Making esters. Alcohols and carboxylic acids react to make esters in esterification reactions. Esters are compounds with the functional group R-COO-R. Esters are sweet-smelling oily liquids used in food flavourings and perfumes.
Functional groups: alcohol, ether, aldehyde, ketone, carboxylic acid, ester, amide, and amine. For each molecule circle and name the functional group. Some molecules will have more than one functional group; in those cases circle and name all functional groups present.

Naming Ethers. Ethers are compounds having two alkyl or aryl groups bonded to an oxygen atom, as in the formula R 1 –O–R 2. The ether functional group does not have a characteristic IUPAC nomenclature suffix, so it is necessary to designate it as a substituent.
And it turns out that because ethers are so simple, a lot of times we're going to use common names more often than the IUPAC names for them. So let's actually go ahead and start off learning the common way first and then I'll teach you guys the IUPAC way as well.
13 PRACTICE PROBLEM. Most ethers are generally considered to be very unreactive. They are unreactive towards most bases and only react with very strong bases where they undergo cleavage of the ether bond. Ethers, however, form peroxides when stored with oxygen for long periods.
Learn about the rules of naming ethers according to IUPAC, including the correct order of substituents and suffixes. This quiz also covers the physical properties of ethers, such as their boiling points, water solubility, and hydrogen bonding characteristics.
