Bowen Family Systems Theory's central construct, differentiation of self (DoS), is one of the most recognized constructs to systemic researchers and psychology professionals. The present study reviewed the available evidence on DoS from the inception of the construct until July 31, 2020.
This paper overviews Bowen family systems theory and its approach to family therapy. It aims to introduce this influential approach and a sample of developments in theory and practice since Bowen's first publications of his research and theory.
Bowen Family Systems Theory consists of eight interrelated concepts and was developed as a natural systems theory of human behavior. A new form of psychotherapy, based on the the-ory, was developed by Bowen, which is applica-ble for individuals, couples, and families.
