Killed shanalotte on my first playthrough. I killed the emerald herald just to see what would have happened imagining she would respawn after I rested at the bonfire... But well, she didn't!

The Emerald Herald's real name is Shanalotte, a name given to her by the dragons. She was created specifically to break the undead curse, but her creators failed. She aids undead in an effort to break their curse.
When killed Shanalotte drops the Aged Feather, and you can no longer use her services (unless revived, but it's unclear whether this is even possible).
Shanalotte guides the Bearer of the Curse in their quest, telling them to seek souls and to seek the king. She will guide the Bearer of the Curse to seek out the Four Old Ones in order to claim their powerful souls.
It would make sense that Aldia sits atop the Dragon Shrine. After all, Shanalotte was created by dragons contrived of men. Aldia being the consciousness in the Ancient Dragon, created Shanalotte...
