The van der Waals / mean field theory gives \(\RDelta v =v_{gas}-v_{liquid}\propto (-t)^{1/2}\), while experiments show a result closer to \(\RDelta v \propto (-t)^{1/3}\). Here \(t\equiv {\bar T}-1=(T-T_\Rc)/T_\Rc\) is the dimensionless temperature deviation with respect to the critical point.
