This section aims at presenting the domain of personality psychology, starting from outlining its key term—personality. Then, it focuses on presenting the chief approaches to the study of personality: psychoanalytic, behavioural and humanistic.
Most theories of personality attempt to provide a comprehensive and integrated general psychology of motivation, development, individual differences, psychopathology and mental health, as well as an account of more specific phenomena such as dreams, creativity, aggressiveness, or social conformity.
In order to understand core constructs in personality psychology from the standpoint of G. W. Allport’s (1937/1951, 1955, 1961/ 1963) psychology of the individual, one must begin by examining William James’s (1890/2010) seminal version of self-theory (see C. S. Hall & Lindzey, 1970).
