Meniere disease (or idiopathic endolymphatic hydrops) is a disorder of the inner ear characterized by hearing loss, tinnitus, and vertigo. It is named after the French physician Prosper Ménière (1799-1862) who first recognised vertigo as an inner ear disorder.
Vestibular neurotomy or neurectomy is now the most common neurosurgical procedure for relieving intractable Meniere’s disease, and it has been performed through a translabyrinthine, retrolabyrinthine, or retrosigmoid route. The best approach used to section the vestibular nerve remains a matter of debate.
