A climatology of the wind waves in the Mediterranean Sea is presented. The climate patterns, their spatio-temporal variability and change are based on a 40-year (1980–2019) wave hindcast, obtained by combining the ERA5 reanalysis wind forcing with the state-of-the-art WAVEWATCH III spectral wave model and verified against satellite altimetry.

The present Atlas has been based on model data, appropriately calibrated by means of satellite altimeter measurements. In that way the systematic space-time coverage, a
The database, named MWM – Mediterranean Wind Wave Model – is based on numerical models (hindcast approach) and required intensive use of all existing measurements both for calibration and continuous validation purposes.
The solution is to make use of all the three sources to obtain the best data-set of wind and wave data presently available in the Mediterranean Sea. The procedure goes along several steps. The buoy data have been used to validate the satellite data.
The Bora, Sirocco, Meltemi, Tramontane, Lebeccio, Mistral and Marin are the most common winds of the Mediterranean. How can you get to know them in advance and what should you expect from them while at sea?
23 maj 2004 · Waves in Oceanic and Coastal Waters describes the observation, analysis and prediction of wind-generated waves in the open ocean, in shelf seas, and in coastal regions with islands,...
