  1. Will Medicare cover SNF care? Medicare will cover SNF care only if all of these are true: • You have Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) and have days left in your benefit period to use Go to page 9 for information on benefit periods • You have a medically necessary inpatient hospital stay of 3 consecutive days or more

  2. What’s covered? Medicare covers these services in a skilled nursing facility (SNF): • Semi-private room (a room you share with other patients) • Meals. • Skilled nursing care. • Medical social services. • Medications. • Medical supplies and equipment used in the facility.

  3. The medical and other health services described in the Medicare Benefit Policy Manual, Chapter 6, “Hospital Services Covered Under Part B,” §§10 - 10.2.4, are generally provided by, or under arrangements made by, skilled nursing facilities and are therefore extended care services.

  4. Skilled care is health care given when you need skilled nursing or rehabilitation staff to manage, observe, and evaluate your care. Examples of skilled care are changing sterile dressings and physical therapy. Medicare will only cover skilled care when you meet certain conditions (see page 8).

  5. Medicare covers skilled nursing and therapy services when your doctor or allowed provider determines that the care you need requires the specialized judgment, knowledge, and skills of a nurse or therapist.

  7. Medicare should pay for skilled nursing facility care if: • The patient received inpatient hospital care for at least three days and was admitted to the SNF within 30 days of hospital discharge.
