The McPherson State Fishing Lake is located on the west border of the refuge where fishing and primitive camping sites are available. The Maxwell Wildlife Refuge is located 6 miles north of Canton, KS. It is a 2,800 acre wildlife refuge on the east side of McPherson State Lake.
