Most companies don’t take them nearly as seriously as a BBB complaint, which few consumers take the initiative to file. A BBB complaint is much more formal and involves filling out a form with all your identifying information, what remedy specifically you are requesting, etc.
The BBB is something that was used largely in the past to get information about companies before it was easy to find reviews online. They essentially only downgrade you if there are unresolved customer conflicts.
The credibility rating you have to pay for though. My company, which has not too many complaints but most of them are unresolved, had an A+. we stopped paying the BBB and now we're D+. By the way, anyone can complain to the BBB for anything, and it's up to the person complaining to mark the issue as resolved.
