Exams. Over 80% of city government positions require you to take and pass a civil service exam. Standardized testing helps ensure the hiring and promotion processes are fair, competitive, and result in the City hiring the most qualified candidate for the job.

Below are the current Open Competitive and Promotion civil service exams currently available. You may hover over the "Open Competitive" and "Promotion" labels to determine which exam type is applicable to you. To view exam details, click on the Exam # or Title.
The civil service exam schedule for the entire year is released annually every July, and is available in alphabetical order or in application period order. DCAS also releases a monthly exam schedule, which you can receive over email by subscribing to our NYC Jobs Newsletter.
The City of New York. Applications Schedule – July 2023. All Dates are Tentative and Subject to Change. To apply for a civil service exam open during this application period, please apply online via the DCAS Online Application System (OASys) at www.nyc.gov/examsforjobs.
Through OASys, aspiring and current City employees may apply for exams and pay for application fees online, obtain information on their scheduled test sessions and the results of their exams, and become eligible for merit-based civil service positions.
