3 mar 2024 · The M16 was based on the half-track personnel carrier M3, and was essentially an MGMC M13 with four .50cal guns. The new weapon mount was designated as M45D, and introduced a 6" (15cm) adapter ring so that the guns could fire to the sides and rear when the armor flaps were unhinged.
A branch of the M3 series became the "M16 Multiple Gun Motor Carriage" (MGMC) from 1944. The M16 grew out of the need for a new, more efficient self-propelled anti-aircraft vehicle capable of keeping pace with the armoured columns extending from various beachheads and flowing to Paris, Rome and Berlin.
