Coordinates: 28°14′35″N 80°51′41″W. Lake Winder is a 1,496-acre (6 km 2) lake in Brevard County, located in the River Lakes Conservation Area. The lake was named after U.S. Army Captain Edward Winder. Early in 1838 Winder was assigned to scout the area for Seminoles. He discovered Lake Poinsett.

Naturally, it is possible to find the north-flowing main river’s entrance, but Lake Winder’s massive development often makes it a complicated process. Some good fishing on the river’s southern stretches, look for vegetation in the shallows.

Lake Winder is the only lake in the St. Johns River basin that doesn't support a marina. The nearest unincorporated settlement is Viera, Florida, 7.3 miles (11.7 km) to the east. It's the third largest lake in Brevard County.
This conservation area includes lakes Washington, Winder and Poinsett. St. Johns River water flow is regulated at one point — a fixed-crest weir located just north of Lake Washington — to help ensure water supply to Melbourne.
