The Battle of Salyersville, also called Battle of Half Mountain (not to be confused with The Battle of Ivy Mountain, which took place in April 1861 [1]) was the largest of the many skirmishes in Magoffin County, Kentucky, during the American Civil War.
Salyersville’s rich history can be explored at the Magoffin County Historical Society’s headquarters at South Church Street in downtown. Their collection of genealogical research, photos, and other historical information is the result of years upon years of research.
Because of its location in the Upper South and its history of settlement by migrants and farmers from Virginia, some residents sided with the Confederacy, despite the general lack of slaves in the area. In 1864, Union forces defeated a Confederate raiding force in the Battle of Salyersville.
10 lis 2011 · October 11 - 20, 1863. Federal reinforcements arrive from Louisa, 300 men under command of Lt. Colonel Orlando Brown, Jr., 14th KY Infantry. Brown's men march up the Burning Fork of Licking River and on to Quicksand in Breathitt County, and back to Salyersville.
Magoffin County Pioneer Village and Museum is museum in downtown Salyersville, Kentucky that exhibits a collection of reconstructed log buildings from, mostly, the eastern region of Kentucky. The Magoffin County Historical Society maintains a Library and Archives Center with a collection of genealogical and historical material at the site.
