The Black Forest is located in The Distant Woods. It's called the Black Forest because it's black and a forest. You gain access to it during the Quest for the Holy MacGuffin. A primary stat of 110 is suggested. If your main stat isn't high enough, you'll see the following message:

I've been struggling my past few runs to get through the MacGuffin quest in a timely manner and was hoping to get some help from you wonderful people how I might speed up my runs a bit. Typically I'll start by unlocking the pyramid doing all three side quests and using the compass.
They have asked that I compile a list of all the items they will need to complete each quest (in regular HC), and where they will find them. Once they know the necessary items to complete each quest and ascend, they'll be able to return, play the game and enjoy it, without feeling a need to constantly recourse to the KoL Wiki.
