The SQL LENGTH function returns the number of characters in a string. The LENGTH function is available in every relational database systems. Some database systems use the LEN function that has the same effect as the LENGTH function. The following illustrates the syntax of the LENGTH function.
LEN() function tells you how many characters exist in the string, excluding trailing white space. DATALENGTH() tells you how much space a given string takes up. For varchar data types, this will be 1 byte per character.
The LEN () function returns the length of a string. Note: Trailing spaces at the end of the string is not included when calculating the length. However, leading spaces at the start of the string is included when calculating the length. Tip: Also look at the DATALENGTH () function.
