1 I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. 2 Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. 3 Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. 4 Abide in me, and I in you.
In order to fruitfulness, we must abide in Christ, must have union with him by faith. It is the great concern of all Christ's disciples, constantly to keep up dependence upon Christ, and communion with him.

John 15:1. I am, &c. — Our Lord having gone with his disciples to the mount of Olives, employed the remaining hours of his ministry in delivering to them a long and most excellent discourse, recorded in this and the following chapter.
In John 15:11-16 the disciples are promised Jesus' joy, while in John 15:17-27 the disciples are promised Jesus' persecution. The context of persecution runs through John 16:4a. However, through it all believers are to love one another as He loved them! WORD AND PHRASE STUDY.
Jesus gave it after Israel’s official and final rejection of Him resulted in the postponement of the messianic kingdom. In the first major section of this Gospel Jesus customarily performed a miracle and then explained its significance. In this section He did the reverse.
