In this commentary I argue that the discrepancy between consensual- and individual-level cultures is itself an important aspect of culture that has heretofore not received the recognition it deserves. Key Words culture, discrepancy, individualism and collectivism, values.
This chapter begins with a discussion of impor-tant cultural beliefs that inform concepts of self in Japan. It is followed by a discussion of psychologi-cal problems in Japan, approaches to counseling in Japan, and a discussion of contemporary issues in clinical and counseling psychology.
