Orange and Auburn were two of the streets they wouldn't go. If you do go to UC at night, try sticking to streets that are well lit or travel in crowds like after a sporting event. Having said that, I'd also stay away from poorly lit streets in OTR and downtown too.
I'm in Prospect Hill which is part of Mt Auburn, but can be quite different at times than along Highland Ave or along Auburn Ave. I would almost consider these three distinct neighborhoods. Prospect Hill is very walkable and safe in my opinion.
I had no issues in Mt Auburn, but between the 2 times I've lived in otr I've had a car break in, attempted house break in and stolen packages. Also much quieter up there due to no true retail/bars, which are easily accessible in otr by walking down the Young St steps.
