Yes it's pointless. There's no 8k media to consume (physical or steaming). You'd have to sit quite a bit closer to the TV than you're used to for a fairly minor visual improvement. 8k TVs also consume about twice as much power as a good 4k TV.

I have yet to see a 4k stream that comes anywhere close to looking as good as a 4k disc, which is several times more data dense than a Netflix stream. Hell, even a really nice lossless 1080p video will look better than a moderately compressed 4k stream.
But really nothing worth going 8k yet. Plus the 8k tech is only worth it in OLED right now. While mini LEDs are nice, they really need to move to the micro LED infrastructure to make it worth it for LEDs TVs.
