Making inferences is a critical part of reading comprehension. It is also one of the most commonly skipped reading strategies when it comes to teaching reading. This is why I created a reading mini unit for making inferences for 3rd Grade and 4th/5th Grade.
Students love the video and it is relatively easy for them to form some inferences throughout. While they are watching, I stop the video three different times to allow them to form inferences and state the evidence that supports that inference.
Videos let your child practice the skill of making inferences without having to worry about the mechanics of reading, like decoding words. I suggest wordless animated videos because they require your child to infer an entire plot.
