The maned wolf is shy and elusive by nature, often avoiding human contact. It is primarily nocturnal and crepuscular, being most active during the twilight hours of dawn and dusk. Having evolved to live in high grass savannas, maned wolves have a thick red coat, long black legs and tall, erect ears. The maned wolf is the largest canid of South America. It looks more like a long-legged fox than a wolf.
Physical Features and Habitat. An adult maned wolf is about 3 feet tall at the shoulder and weighs about 50 pounds. Its muzzle is long and pointed. The animal has red-brown or golden-red fur over most of its body, white fur on the inside of its ears, a white throat, and a white tip on the tail.
