This book aims to explore a crucial but neglected philosophical issue: the issue of contingency versus inevitability within science. I will refer to it below, borrowing a vocabulary introduced by Ian Hacking (1999), as the “contingentist”/“inevitabilist” debate.¹ On first approach, the issue points to questions such as those that follow.
