Malaysia is one of the countries with the highest rates of overweight and obesity in Southeast Asia 1. According to the National Health and Morbidity Survey 2019, 19.7% of individuals – 15.3% of men and 24.7% of women – are living with obesity in Malaysia 2 .

In the National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) 2019, the current prevalence of obesity among Malaysian adults was 19.7% . Pahang, Pulau Pinang, Terengganu, and Sabah showed the lowest rates of obesity (15.7%–18.6%) in comparison to other states in Malaysia .
2 sie 2023 · In Malaysia, a nationwide survey conducted in 2019 revealed a rising trend in obesity prevalence, increasing from 15.1% in 2011, to 17.7% in 2015, and finally to 19.9% in 2019 [6–8].
The prevalence of obesity was reported at 20.1% in this study among Malaysian adults. The prevalence was signifi-cantly higher among women (24.9%) than men (15.6%), with no significant difference in locality, educational level, and monthly income.
