On October 17, 2015, 180 million tons of rock slid into Taan Fiord, an arm of Icy Bay, generating a tsunami that stripped forest from 8 square miles (20 square km) of Wrangell St.-Elias National Park and Preserve and reached as high as 633 feet (193 m) above the fjord, the fourth-highest tsunami ever recorded.

11 kwi 2016 · On 17th October 2015 the huge Tyndall Glacier landslide occurred on the flanks of Taan Fjord in Icy Bay in Alaska. I featured this landslide, which was detected via the seismic detection system developed by Goran Ekstrom and Colin Stark, in a blog post at the start of the year.
The resulting tsunami extended the 8-mile length of the fiord, carrying logs and debris all the way to Icy Bay. NPS photo. The Icy Bay landslide began when a mass of rock, perched 2800 feet above sea level gave way, unleashing over 150 million tons of debris.

The Taan Fiord event bore a strong similarity to the July 1958 landslide and megatsunami in Alaska's Lituya Bay. [7] The Taan Fiord landslide was the largest recorded in North America since the eruption of Mount St. Helens in May 1980, [5] and the largest non-volcanic landslide in North America ever recorded. [9]
