6 paź 2024 · In this handbook we will focus on the Tengwar writing system itself. You can find elsewhere information about the grammar and vocabulary of Sindarin, Quenya and other Elvish languages. Modes. A Tengwar mode is a set of conventions used to transcribe a specific language. There are modes for Quenya, Sindarin, English and many other languages.
The most important languages were: Quenya (the language of the High-Elves) and Sindarin (the language of the Grey-Elves). Early in their history they devised an alphabet for writing their languages.
Sindarin is can be written with a number of alphabets, including the Latin alphabet, Cirth and Tengwar. The Tengwar script for Sindarin can be written with vowel diacritics (Standard Mode), or with separate symbols for vowels (the Mode of Beleriand).

This paper proposes to analyse a limited subset of tengwa-texts, or specimina: those written by J.R.R.Tolkien's own hand in Modern English, as opposed to those in languages of Middle-earth or other Mannish languages, such as Old English or Latin (instances of which do exist), and employing a full mode.
