You teach a kindergartner a vowel, you show them a bunch of words and the different ways that sound is written in English. Then you move onto to the next vowel and do the same thing. You show them /i/ and then "bee" "tea" "key" "tree" "team". And then you teach them /ɪ/ and show them "bin" "tin" "pin" etc.
