IMHO the most convenient way is to play ISOS out of external SSD. That way the PS3 reads from both internal HDD (game data) and external drive and you get the fastest loading times. When PS3 has to read both disc image and game data out of internal HDD, loading times are longer.

download FW file that is matching type and version of firmware already exists on ps3(CFW, OFW or HFW). put it on fat32 usb drive on the path "PS3\UPDATE", then after replacing hdd you will be prompted to insert that usb drive to start installation on FW on new hdd.
