Trees grow naturally in the Forest and The Park, where you can break logs and the decaying leaves will drop saplings. It is also possible to plant saplings on your private island, which grow normally and will drop additional saplings once chopped down.
Place the dirt around the tree so that it catches the dropped saplings. Chop down the tree and make a crafting table and wooden pickaxe. Catch the saplings and replant them.

11 maj 2016 · you can walk around any spruce lobby with some shears to get saplings if you really need em, or you can spawn a big spruce tree with 4 saplings then cut it down and let the leaves break themselves over hoppers (a lot might despawn this way tho)
8 lis 2010 · If you use the Forestry Mod, you can use a grafter which gives you a 100% chance of a sapling from a leaf block. However, grafters have a durability of 5 so you'll need a lot of those if you want a lot of saplings.
Spruce sapling on top of a dirt block, and the dirt block on your floor that isn’t dirt (I.e you build your sky island with cobblestone) then you’ll be completely safe to bonemeal away. Also it only turns it into podzol if there’s four saplings not just one
