Sadly all semi-precious gems (opal, jade, red topaz) will have a chance to fail when cutting, even up to 99 crafting. Check out this page to see the cutting/fail rates for the gems.
Opal rings can be enchanted into rings of pursuit, which are basically dead content. So it makes sense that they wont buy. I'd leave them in for 10% under unless you really need the money, at some point someone will buy them. I use to cut uncut opals and sell the cut ones and make decent amount of money!
