I live in Los Angeles and I'm regularly asked by someone out front if I want to go to a free screening. Usually at the Sherman Oaks Arclight theater. Not sure why that one in particular is a high traffic recruiting ground for these screeners, though.
In 2003 a marketing company was sent a copy of a workprint (partially edited and scored version of a film with incomplete visual effects) of Ang Lee's Hulk and one of the employees leaked it weeks before the theatrical release date. There are extremely strict rules about handling of these screeners.
From what I see in torrent sites, screeners are often released in DVD format. Why won't film makers send screeners in Blu-ray discs, at least for a better visual on the film since Blu-ray video has a higher resolution than DVDs?
