I usually do standard Arch paper sizes (12x18, 18x24) and standard international paper sizes (A3). I always make the canvas 2x or 3x the size of those standard dimensions and always set the resolution to 300 dpi. Same for when I'm posting to social media.
300 dpi for a card image will limit your use to cards, only. 600 dpi will give you options to use it in a rulebook or other larger format.
