These two joints work together to form a modified hinge joint that allows the knee to bend and straighten but also to rotate slightly from side to side.
The knee joint capsule connects the margins of the femoral and tibial articular surfaces. The anterior portion of the capsule attaches to the borders of the patella. The lateroposterior portion of the capsule gives passage to the tendon of the popliteus muscle. Like other joints in the body, the knee joint has a specific capsular pattern.
